Bento Lunches
Bento Box

Hey everyone; I just wanted to show one of the three designs I'm doing, for those of you who answered my question earlier about what you'd like to have design wise on Bento Boxes. The others will probably be a Celtic Mermaid design and some kind of tattoo design. Thanks everyone!

That's actually clear vinyl printed on an epson inkjet printer, you have to be careful though because the colors come out duller automatically and then if you're not putting it on a white surface, the color of whatever is underneath shows through and messes with your colors even more. My original designs were quite vibrant actually, but I'm working with some water slide decal next and hopefully those will turn out better = )

That is a really awesome idea!

I'm an artist myself... and silly me never thought of custom making my own bentos! I'll have to sketch up some designs. Thanks for tossing this idea out there!

Yes, it was a lot of fun! I have a bunch of other designs I'm working on too, I'm making a monster series for my product design class. Right now I'm just figuring out what's the best and most professional way to put a design on the box itself. Actually a lot of my classmates wanted to buy this one that I had, lol.

the monster looks like something out of Samurai Jack!!!

Looks like a customized Lock-N-Lock. Am I right? The idea is cool, but how do you wash the thing? By hand or can it go in the dishwasher? I just might be interested if you can come up with cool designs that aren't Hello Kitty-cutsie. I'm 47 and work in a professioinal financial building, so cutsie stuff just won't fly around the workplace.

Actually it's a sandwich container part of a two part bento. I have three different styles of 'natural lunch' bentos, all 500 ML that I'm going to be working with. My next two designs wont be cutesy, this one was tailored for my little sister (who's thirteen and into hot topic sort of things) but the next one will be for me or my grandmother. Perhaps those would be more suited to your tastes. I'm probably going to go with a celtic mermaid design and some kind of tattoo art design (likely just a tribal design of some kind) If you have any input I'd love to hear it as far as what you'd like to see on a Bento Box. I know I don't like the cutesy cute stuff either as far as taking it to school goes.

As far as washing, I haven't tested it out, and I don't have a dishwasher that I can try it in. However the water slide decal should be hand washable safe and microwave safe, I'm not sure about the vinyl (I'll test it after critique) However if the design was just on the lid, then it would be easy to take off when microwaving or washing and probably wouldn't get too dirty.

I love these! I know you're doing this for a class, but I wish you could make these and sell them!!!

I actually have enough supplies where I could make a few extras and sell them if people really were interested. I have to print on an entire page so I end up with 4-5 decals when I only need 1 for my class and my sister.

that's VERY awesome.
i wonder if there's a paint out there that would stick to plastic and be waterproof at the same time.

Good idea.

I wonder if Acrylic would stick to the plastic and if it would hold under a heavy gloss or enamel spray. I might have to try that in the future = ) That would be pretty sweet, one of a kind Bento Boxes!

Did you design the decal or did you just print it off the Internet?
21st-Feb-2009 05:43 pm (UTC)
I designed both myself, I would never just print something off the internet and put it on a bento box.

Those are great! I would love to see the Celtic Mermaid, as I'm a Celtic artist myself. Looks like you could do some business with these.

I'd like to see the Celtic Mermaid one when it's up. :)

Is there a particular brand of the vinyl paper you would recommend? I simply must try this out myself! :)
23rd-Feb-2009 12:43 am (UTC)
Actually I would reccomend going to Kinkos and getting a clear sticker paper, the vinyl that I purchased from Papilio.com did not work as well as the sheets I got at kinkos. I think they're .25 or .50 cents each- just make sure you know what kind of printer you're using and if you want to use clear or white sticker paper.

Where do you get the blank boxes?
Very cute design!

I got them from ichiban kan's website, the natural lunch boxes.
