Bento # 478

Although this isn't a cutesy kyaraben it's IMO still one of the pretty ones. Sweetcorn, peas and carrots are such lovely colours when put together... And it helps the fact that the spaghetti & sausage is rather bland, colourwise. I wish it waspossible to get the small cocktail sausages in the red version here. We do have bright red coloured sausages here but only in "hot dog size" - and all things being equal the red colour SUITS sausages so well... (originally it was a ploy to disguise the poor quality of meat of course, but at least here in Denmark, a "red sausage" is still how a cooked (as opposed to fried) sausage SHOULD look...)

My First Bento Lunch

So I finally got myself a bento lunch box. After reading about everyone's kick ass lunches (onbentolunch) I really wanted to make a kick ass lunch myself.

Collapse )

Funny story, when I first made the rice I added too much water so the rice was almost this gelatinous goo (like rice krispy treats when you just add the rice) it was so slimy, and they weren't rice balls more like rice blobs. Though after a night in the fridge they're a little more manageable. :D

Sushi lunch

It's been a long time since I packed a sushi bento. Today we're having California roll, kappa (cucumber) maki, inarizushi, bunny container of soy sauce. I kept that little packet of pink pickled ginger from a sushi takeaway a while again, heh.

1/20 Bentos #47 & #48

Today, bentos for the boys. CDC gets left over pork roast in gravy, mashed potato pancake (I tried to make a star shape with my onigiri mold but it didn't work :( ), green beans, deviled egg, carrot stick bundled with a slice of bell pepper, strawberry slices and grapes. A small container of ketchup under carrots (CDC has to have ketchup on ALL meat, no mater what!)

Little one's snack bento for preschool. Picky eater is on a cheese stick and strawberry binge right now. He is also really into the matchstick carrots. Maybe he's not so much of a picky eater as a selective eater, he selects only a few item, and for days at a time that is all he likes to eat.
I also gave him a strawberry cobbler bar and some grapes, I wonder if those will get eaten?

Bento Challenge lunch 5

Bento Challenge lunch 6

Great stir-fry, fried tofu, bright red grape tomatoes on the "bottom" tier. Sticky rice with a grape tomato in the "top" tier. Not pictured: a small apple.

This is one of my favorite boxes. It says "Pleasure Supply: The simple form makes a beautiful and practical lunch box. You can have full realization of its high quality, use by use."

3rd bento

So I’m not a weekend bento-er for sure!

Too busy being 20 to bento on weekends but I have discovered that my mom and fellow co-workers watch my bento-ing (HI MOM!) and are curious to see more.

So here we go again!

Today we have octo-dogs (I love watching them cook) Some sautéed peppers and onions in tin foil packet, my mom’s favorite salsa dip in the heart (she has a bowl of it waiting for her at home), ketchup and mustard in the mini muffin papers, Carrot tulips covered by Frito chips.

The salsa dip is just sour cream, cream cheese, salsa (we like the mid western one with corn in it) and shredded 3 cheese blend. All mircowaved together and mixed.

First Attempt at a 'Real' Breakfast Bento

While I bring my breakfast to work every day, I have never bothered to actually make it into a bento. I was inspired by mushmo  to attempt to make one. She said in her comments that she has made fake onigiri out of oatmeal for breakfast before, and I decided to give it a try. I think they turned out pretty well. I filled them with a couple of dried cranberries, and they held their shape even when I had to move them into a different box. I didn't try to hold them and eat them though...I just used a fork. :) They did taste a little funny and I'm not sure if it's because the oats are probably pretty old, or if they just took on a weird taste from the bento box. Either way, once I figure it out, these will definitely become a regular staple in my breakfast bentos! This bento comes to 4 Weight Watchers points.

This bento contains:
2 oatmeal onigiri = 1 cup of oatmeal (2 points)
1 tsp. dried cranberries (0 points)
2 Morningstar Breakfast Links (1 point)
1/4 cup grapes (.5 points)
1 tbsp. Lite Syrup in the blue strawberry (.5 points)

Didn't quite finish all the bulk baking yesterday, and today I watched the Inauguration and am dealing with a sick kid, but hopefully I'll get it done later this afternoon, and then I'll have some better bentos.

Lunch Box 623: Applet

My whole office spent lunchtime in the conference room, watching the inauguration. And In that spirit I present an all-American bento: meatloaf, baked Japanese sweet potato, steamed snow peas, strawberries, persimmon, and a yates apple.

Check out that little bitty apple! It's only about an inch and a half high by about 2.5 inches in diameter. I suppose it says something about me that the first thing I thought when I saw these was "chibi apples!"

477: kitty inarizushi

These were so adorable when posted last week that I had to copy them. I had the devil's own time getting the nori decorations to stick though, I tried water, cream cheese and finally butter and the things still kept falling off (note the missing whiskers). Any tips?
Also brussels sprouts, carrots, grapes and leftover pork chop on skewers.
PS: sorry for duplicates for those who read my blog. Took me a while to figure out the LJ change that makes you select which blog you want to post to!

Middle Eastern-esque Bento

I was at Whole Foods this weekend and couldn't resist buying some of their red pepper hummus. So, naturally, I had to construct the rest of this bento around that theme. ;) This bento comes to 5.5 Weight Watchers points.

1/2 cup spinach (0 points)
1/4 cup red pepper hummus (2 points)

Bento # 479

Today I tried to do something cute. Unfortunately the soy I used to stamp the Kitty face with bled almost beyond recognition. But anyway.. I tried... and that counts, I hope...

Bento # 479
Bento # 479
Yaki udon with carrots and romanesco, decorated with cucumber stars & -moon. Fried fish dumplings shaped as Hello Kitty and the bear. Soy and nori for decoration. Sweetcorn and a carrot flower. Cherry tomato with balloon pick.

New gear, and a question

I got the Putifresh banana gear from Ichiban Kan, it's so cute! And I'm excited because my old box forced me to pack more food than I could eat. This one holds just the right amount. Here's my first bento in it:

Top tier: Meatballs, Wee Brie, soy sauce in the bear bottle, and jasmine rice
Bottom tier: Grape tomatoes, crackaz for the brie, grapes that I swear look more appetizing in person, and a peppermint patty.

The question: For those of you who own the apple and bear bottle set, HOW IN THE WORLD do you get anything into the apple bottles? I tried ranch dressing and realized it was too thick, so I was going to put the soy in there instead, but I couldn't get that in either :/ I'd hate to just let them go unused because I'm too dense to figure them out. Halp?

(no subject)

Yikes! I lost my camera cord for awhile there so no bento pics. How sad :( However, I found it today in my car of all places :P

Kidlet has some sort of Pokemon (I forget now what he told me it was lol) drawn on rice cheese on top of a tofurkey sandwich with checkered apple and grapes. Can you tell I need to grocery shop? lol
