Anyone know where I can find bento boxes and/or other supplies in Manhattan -- m2m, maybe? What about one of Super H-Marts in Queens?

I'm curious myself, as I live about an hour outside. Sometimes you can find cute character bento boxes and utensils in the Elizabeth Street mall (the underground portion) in Chinatown. I'm guessing there might be some good finds in food stores around St. Mark's place but I've yet to test this theory :o

I've looked EVERYWHERE for bento boxes and supplies in Manhattan. Here's the scoop.

m2m- does not have any boxes or supplies.

Sunrise Mart- on 9th between 2nd and 3rd has some but they're imported from Japan so they charge you $20 for the tiniest bento box. Plus they only have one or two at a time.

There is a store called Katagiri but I heard it's hard to find and they only seemed to have 3 or 4 boxes when I spoke to them on the phone. I've never been there.

JAS Mart on St. Marks - you can find onigiri molds and ingredients but no boxes

There is a Korean store on 32nd called HanAhReum ( I think. It's next door to a restaurant called Won Jo) and they sometimes have a bento box in the back on the very bottom of the shelf, but they look more like the Container Store clear boxes. Once in a while, there is a cute bento box but they're hard to find and see in the back. If you ask anyone in the store, they will tell you they have NONE. Not always true.

If you can travel outside of Manhattan, in NJ you can go to Mitsuwa. I heard there is a bus that goes from Manhattan to Mitsuwa. The place is a huge Japanese store. They have supplies and 5-10 bento boxes but they are PRICEY. Not as pricey as Sunrise Mart but pricey.
However in that complex, there is a store that sells Japanese stationary, bowls, luggage, etc.... They have a section in the stationery section that has cheap bento boxes . The 5-10 dollar range. But most of these don't come with the bento bands and they are ususally just one tier.

If you ever go to Long Island, there is a Super H Mart in Williston Park. They don't have bento boxes but there is a store two doors down from them in the same complex that sells Sanrio stuff and dishes and etc that just got their bento stuff 2 months ago. It's super cheap 2-12 dollar range. They have bento supplies. They have those plastic soy containers in those fish and pig shapes. They have the cupcake liner things. They have onigiri plastic covers to keep your nori and rice separate until you're ready to eat ( I'm not sure how you do it since all the instructions are in Japanese). They have tamogoki ( spelling this wrong. Square omelette pan) pans for 5 dollars.
Downside: The bento boxes don't have bento bands. The place closes early 7 or 8 pm. Everyone who works there is Korean and their English isn't always great. It's easy for me because I speak Korean but I know my husband went there without me one time to surprise me with something and he said that it took him forever to get them to understand him. Sorry.

That's good to know, I never noticed the molds at JAS mart. I'll have to pick some up next time.

Oh I forgot to mention. I went to 3 different H Marts in Queens and they didn't have any. There was one H Mart that had a store on the side and they sold very tupperware looking bento boxes for 20 dollars. One of the woman tried giving me directions for a big store that sold bento boxes but either she gave me bad directions or I missed it completely because I never found it. Of course, I don't know Queens at all so.....

I have been looking everywhere. I actually found onigiri molds at a grocery store in chinatown but no boxes.

I need to find a place so I can go crazy with my bento addiction cause ordering from japan takes too long to get here!!!

I think i found a japanese store around the wall street area and I was there once but I havent been back. When i get back over there I will let you guys know what I found.

i went to katagiri (224 E 59th St) last week. they had some bento supplies (rice molds, dip and soy containers, plastic grass) and a few boxes in the back on a bottom shelf ranging from 5 dollars (plain clear ones) to 16 (huge bento with a clear lid). they also had some black men's bentos. no character/novelty boxes.

yesterday i went to the banzai (japanese 99-cent store) in brighton beach (413 Brighton Beach Avenue) and they also had some bento supplies, collapsible sandwich containers, and a few really cheap ($2-3) bentos on a bottom shelf that were brightly colored but not character bentos. banzai's prices were half katagiri's.
